Samal Island Inland Tour: Old House, Hagimit Falls and Bat Cave

Home again.

I am back in Davao. On my first step into the Paradise Island  Beach Resort one of the porters greeted me with
Welcome home, sir.
Sometimes I wonder what strong impressions I leave behind. And by the way I had no problems getting a metered taxi here at the airport.

Monday, I will be flying first to Singapore and than to Brisbane.

Bargaining for beginners...

I stepped out of the ferry today and was greeted with a:

"Do You need a taxi, Sir!"

My reply was a simple "Yes, BellaVista Hotel."

"Only 375 PHP, Sir."

I turned around and walked away. 5 meters later the price dropped to 200 PHP because someone else wanted to drive me. The first one lost interest.

I said: "No, either 150 PHP or a metered taxi. You and I know that the drive will cost max 130 PHP for the metered taxi."

The guy tried to get some other people to rent him. But nobody wanted. Most of the taxis and people gone. He came back to me and accepted. I hate bargaining. If he just offered a reasonable price I would not have wasted 5 minutes of my life.

But this is typical for Cebu and there are to many idiots who are paying the first price.

By the way I bargained for 6 Euros down to 2,5 Euros and would not move while he offered 180 PHP. I hate bargaining. But otherwise I pay prices like in Germany. That is no alternative.

Bohol in one day.

Ok. I did not want to be in any kind of stress. But I don't want to feel bored either. After the wonderful Boracay I am now at the small boring Alona Beach on Panglao Island. The beach is nice, but it does not compare well to White Beach. The room itself is to expensive in my taste. And yesterday I did everything what I liked to do in Bohol.

I expected my driver and guide for the day at 900. At 915 I decided that he is a no-show and went to organize another one. The good thing about the Philippines is the availability of men-power. So 15 minutes later I was on the way to the first stop of my daytrip.

The Place of the Blood Compact between a spanish conquistador and a local chieftain.

Von 20100127-Bohol

The blood compact is a sign of friendship. At least the friendship spain claimed for their colonies. Further down the coastal road are several towns with spanish colonial style buildings. Those who have been to latin america know what I mean. One time my driver that to me: "Yet another town." I found this amusing.

At the Loboc River we changed directions to the Chocolate Hills. There was a stop to hunt a Tarsier.

Von 20100127-Bohol

It is the smallest primate of the world and Yes, exactly, Your cousin.

It was nearly raining at the Chocolate Hills. To Bad and too many tourists.

Von 20100127-Bohol

But I like the view. Especially sunset and sunrise must be great. But I won't have the opportunity now. After this short stop we went onto some hanging bridges. Indiana Jones here I come.

Von 20100127-Bohol

We skipped lunch and drove to the oldest church in Bohol.

Von 20100127-Bohol

Unfortunately it was closed. So nothing to say about it. After an uneventful drive back to Alona Beach. I was bored to death in the afternoon. Good that I will be moving again in a few minutes. All pictures are in my picasa account.

I You are going to Bohol. The Driver/Guide and car cost about 2500 PHP for the day. A cheaper alternative is to rent some motorbikes. They cost around 500 PHP the day plus fuel. So you can explore more by yourself and the traffic is not as bad as in Mindanao or Metro Manila.

Alona Beach is really calm and boring. But if You are a diver you can do a lot of diving and other people can go on a dolphin watching trip. So if I would have stayed here I would be on a boat now playing with Flipper.

On the move again

My day started at 4:45 am. I really think that there are better ways to leave the island. Moving in a Tricycle at 5:30 is fairly fresh. After that waiting on the boat till the sun is up and the boat is full. Crossing the strait to Caticlan.

After that it gets annoying. Sitting in a 12 Person max vehicle with 15 Persons including the driver is really hard on my nerves. So I did the only possible thing and went to sleep. At least I don't know if something bad is happening.

In Kalibo I said good bye to my family and went on to get into a really small airport. I changed my flight from the destination Cebu to Tagbiliran on Bohol. That helped to avoid taking the ferry from Cebu to Tagbiliran, instead I had a transfer in Manila again and a 4 hour waiting time there.

Waiting in Manila was Ok. Nothing special. The next interesting thing that happened was the touchdown in Tagbiliran. 30 meter to the left and to the right of the plane where buildings. Small houses. Each airport I have seen before had a lot more breathing space. Tagbiliran has one runway and no room to expand. But the A320-200 could still land here.

The transfer service to the hotel delivered me at Pyramid at Alona Beach after a uneventful 45 minute drive. The only remarkable thing is, that Bohol does not look as poor as Mindanao. Maybe all the tourists are helping. Alona Beach is a mini copy of White Beach. I think I will be fed up in a few days if I need to stay in Beach Ressorts far longer. I am looking forward to Brisbane. Not so much to Christchurch (It is cold there. Not as cold as in Germany but still.)

I have a whole cottage for myself. And it is really big. Two levels. So if my character advances one level he gains the ability to sleep in a bed. ;) or maybe two queensize-beds. ;)  But I would rather have paid half the money for only a bed. Bud seems like that was not possible. No spare rooms in the acceptable price range and I don't want to risk it, to get here without a room.

Tomorrow I'll go to the chocolate hills. I am excited.

I hate Software Developer!

Not that I don't know that I am one of those myself. But generally they are really stupid people (if you like including myself.)

I hate ATMs too. They are rather unresponsive if You yell at them. I believe they can't be impressed if You refrain from destroying them.

So yesterday evening I went out to the ATM because I am desperately in need of some cash. As expected the first ATM was offline. In front of the next ATM there where two italian guys. I ask them if they are done and they let me proceed. The card was accepted. I choose to get an receipt and entered the pin.

The next thing I saw is a receipt being printed and my EC-Card being ejected. No money. The italians ask me if I did not get any money, too. Argh!!! Why didn't I get an advanced warning.

Instead the receipt tells me nothing out of order. When I get home I compare the receipt with an older one and there is an additional line:
Line down 912

So asking your best friend (google) did not help me any further. Now I believe I need to get to the bank during office hours to get my money and confirm that no funny business is happening.

Tell me why I don't get a usable answer from the machine and why the machine did not say directly that it is out of action? This has to be one of this typical security by obscurity things. Oh how I hate Software Developers.

Concluding my rant normally you can have quite a few good parties with them. ;)

On a side note...

  • Gemma (the boat) is floating again.
  • Korean food is still to hot/spicy for me most of the time.
  • Only two days left on Boracay.
  • It is raining again.
  • I need to start planning my next two weeks.

Mt. Luho

Breakfast Reality TV

This morning I went down for breakfast and had entertainment of the unusual kind. Pictures of the event will follow later. So I was sitting there while one of the bigger boats in front of the dive shop slowly started sinking.

Interesting how the owner and the family tried to rescue stuff from the boat. The water is not very deep so after a short while only the front of the cabin was still over water and the ship was done for. One of the employees of the divegurus told me a few minutes later, that this is the third time that this boat sunk.

How many times are boats in europe allowed to sink, before someone is pulling the plug the last time? Anyway she said, that the owner will pay a lot of money to make the engine runnable again and then the ship will wait for the next tourists to take somewhere.

Later in the morning a group of 10-15 people pulled the boat a bit onto the shore. We will see what happens tomorrow.

Cliff Diving for fun.

1. Mal: Holding a Kite.

So I was there, I did it and I moved on . Damn nearly the same sentence I was using on the topic of diving. It was really fun.

I was doing a two hour introductionary course. First we used a small kite like the ones you play with as kids. It was really easy, but you can't fly all those crazy figures, because this is not the purpose of the kite. So I was getting a feel for how to move the kite and it was ok.

After that we assembled a real kite, although still a very small one. While assembling the kite one of the more advanced pupils of my instructor landed his kite in a palm tree. Was nice to see, him sitting on the beach and waiting for help to arrive. They could somehow disentangle the kite from the palm tree without any damage. Otherwise it would have destroyed a 1500 Dollar kite.

After that the survivor went back to kiting and my instructor (Horst, Schwabe) walked into the water with me and the training kite. I should get the feeling for the power behind the kite, so I should hold his vest while he would start using the kite to get us swimming. Wow. Crazy stuff. I can't imagine how much power with more wind and a bigger kite there is to use. After getting a lot of respect I should hold the kite by myself. Playing around a bit at the 12 o'clock position. I had trouble keeping my balance but it was ok. The last step was I should drag us with the kite through the water.

Damn... maybe 10 seconds and the kite dropped into the water.

Diving is far more relaxing. If you are desperately in need for action You should have a look on kiteboarding. I will think today if this stuff is worth the 300 Dollar course or if the money is better invested in visiting some other places.

Maybe I should look for a Arnis or Escrima School. At least I know that this is fun and worth my money.

Couch diving at Divegurus.

So I am still at the dive shop Divegurus. And I am nearly always listening to the briefings of the diving instructors for the dive sites.

One thing I started is googling all the expected fishes in the dive site. So I finally know what Eagly Rays, White Tip Sharks, Sting Rays or Potato Cods look like. Btw. it is really safe and you won't get wet. ;)

They have blog too: http://divegurusboracay.blogspot.com/

Wanna buy Avatar on Blue Ray Disc?

I don't know how many times a guy walks up to the dive shop and offers the disc. The film is still in cinemas so it is obvious that this one is a pirated version of low quality.

Sometimes I really like to know how many tourists are that stupid to buy the movie and likely are caught at customs at an european airport. There must be a lot of them (at least the buying kind) because otherwise I won't see the seller moving up and down the beach several times a day.

Before anybody of you thinks about it. It is not worth the risk and a cinema ticket costs something around one euro and normally you can stay all day and watch the film several times.

Conclusion: There are stupid tourists.

The sun is shining again..

Last thursday was the last time I have seen the tropical sunshine of Boracay. At this time the wind picked up to and reached 30 knots and above. Can you believe it 6 days without sun in a tropical setting? The temperature dropped down to 25°C and I started to freeze. I was really thinking about buying warmer clothes.

Normally today would be my last day on Boracay, but I decided that I still want to take a shot on kiteboarding. The wind the last few days was not suitable for beginners so I needed to wait. Maybe I have more luck today. Need to talk to Ga about that in a few minutes and then I could take the tricycle to Bolabog Beach.

So I am staying one more week at Boracay and I will be skipping the visit to Cebu and cutting the visit of Bohol down to two days. My plans to leave the philippines on Feb. 1st did not change so far. I still need to think about the weather on the southern island of New Zealand.

Drifting is fun.

Exit again

I was there the third time. This time I did it. I went home at the specified time and only drinking two San Miguel Lights.

The Pig was not as lucky as myself. The Kiteboarders had something to celebrate.

Kiteboarding

This Weekend will be fun.

There is a carnival like fiesta in Kalibo this weekend. So every one told me the island will be deserted trough the weekend. That sounds like fun and really relaxing. :)

http://blog.kopperschmidt.info/

Sometime ago I decided that I don't want to connect the blog with my main-domain. I revised the decision because it does not really matter.

You now can reach the blog via http://blog.kopperschmidt.info/.

Myself on Facebook

Ok. I still believe Facebook is evil. But I am meeting to many people here who are asking about a Facebook account. So I got me an account and I will test it.

Don't expect to many personal facts about me.

Visting other Beaches

Yesterday afternoon my cousin Toto took me for a ride on his motorbike around the island. We went to several beaches and I now know that there are places on this island that are still in need to be developed.

There are missing streets, plumbing and electricity. It was really nice to sea this other side of Boracay. In my opinion they should not develop them to be attractive to tourists, because many more tourists will destroy this island.

One thing they did well here is that there should be not buildings exceeding three stories. So you do not see the destroyed landscapes of Turkey or Greece here in Boracay. Ok there are view Buildings that ignore the limit. But they are no hotels.

The pictures are in my picasa account.

Letzten Posts in englisch

Massage with a (really) happy ending.

This thing happened a few days ago on the day before i went diving. Now I find it quite funny. But at the time it was not really relaxing.

On Boracay you can get very good and cheap massages. There are a lot of people offering them on the beach or you go to a massage parlor directly at the beach or perhaps you go to a spa. The prices start at round about 350 PHP (5-6 Euros) per hour. So one kind of entertainment all the tourists from Europe are doing is getting a massage.

So I walked my way down the beach and a girl offered me a massage. Like all others she hat the menu in her hand it looked like 700 PHP for 90 minutes swedish oil massage. So nothing better to do I said yes.

She took me for an unexpected long walk away from the beach to a private room. The first thing she did was turn out the big light and put a small ambient red light into a wall socket. I just thought what the hell is happening now. I only wanted a normal massage. How do I get out of here? Is she already an adult? What happens if I am gonna cry for help?

Lucky me she did not take any kind of clothes of and stayed fully dressed the whole time and she did nothing funny. So I was really happy with my happy ending without the Happy Ending and could enjoy the massage and finally could relax.

Some time later I asked my cousin Ga which and where she would recommend a massage. It was the same one I went to. So no funny stuff was about to happen. Expectations can exceed everything. ;)

By the way a massage in a spa can be really expensive some cost up to 9000 PHP. I can take my family out to dinner four times for that money. So the question is, why should I pay that much. Perhaps the ending is a lot better and there is no scary stuff?

Evening out with Gemma and Sarah

Yesterday I needed to take a big break. Going to bed early and just relaxing. Here is the story:

The evening before yesterday Gemma and Sarah, Sisters from England I met here at the dive shop, had their last evening on the island and we decided to go to dinner and have a nice time at the bar. Alcohol is to cheap here. Normally you pay more for any kind of juice or coke than the ordinary rum. So a rum coke would look like two fingers of coke and the rest of the glass is rum.

In my opinion that is really stupid because a lot of drinks are tasting like shit. Anyway after dinner we went to Exit a really nice beach bar where Mikki took me on the night of my arrival. We each had five different cocktails. So fifteen cocktails cost us roundabout 1500 PHP (25 Euros).

By the way never take an orange based cocktail like Tequila Sunrise on the philippines. They very rarely have fresh orange juice but a lot of this sugar powder with orange taste. So the sunrise was getting nearly undrinkable sweet.

At one o'clock we went home I believe. At the dive shop I asked them if I should bring them to their cottage or if I can go to my bed. They were ok with leaving me here. I greeted the guard and went in search of my bed.

I fell asleep quickly. Then there was a knock at my door.

Commercial Break for all the perverts out there. ;)

Grabbing my sheet I went to the door and on the other side was Gemma. She excused herself and told me that Sarah fell over in the bathroom, banged her head, it did not stop bleeding and there were no guards or receptionists at their low-budget resort.
So after maybe half an hour of sleep (power napping for the win) I put on my clothes and we went to their cottage. Not without myself forgetting about my key, locking the room door and forgetting my money. At least I had the camera to proof the night action.

We went to their room and tried to calm down Sarah. Finally we found some people and got a guide to a local clinic. The wound was luckily superficial. She received a painkiller and a tetanus booster shot. And she got a really nice head bandage. I was looking forward to take a picture of Edwin her diving instructor when he sees her with the head bandage. (It never happened because the next day she wore a flower-power-style scarf.) Then we walked back to our rooms.

I was really happy that my guard had a spare key for my room or maybe unlucky? ;) 4 o'clock in the morning I finally went to a peaceful three-hour-sleep.

So the moral of this story:
  • to bad that I like being a nice guy. (I still miss you J.)
  • don't book into a hostel/hotel/whatever without a helpful hand at night.
  • check for your room key and money before you leave the room.
  • don't look to surprised when a girl knocks on your door at night.
  • don't be surprised that the cocktails and longdrinks taste bad on the philippines.
  • find a fresh mango juice based cocktail.

Crocodile Island

Family Dinner at the Wet Market.

Tolles Konzept.

1. Mal: Klaus geht unter.

Gestern war mein Discover Scuba Diving Kurs. Ich bin nicht überzeugt davon...

Im Moment könnte man meine Stimmung mehr als been there, done that and moved on bezeichnen.

Beach Walk on White Beach

1 Stunde Autofahrt.
1,5 Stunden warten. (Einchecken, Sicherheitskontrollen usw.)
1,5 Stunde Flugzeit
2 Stunden warten.
1 Stunde Flug.
2 Stunden Busfahrt.
15 Minuten Bootsfahrt
15 Minuten Jeepneyfahrt.
5 Minuten laufen.

En route to Boracay

In Deutschland verschlafe ich so was ja immer.

Tolles neues Jahr...
