Last days in Phuket and first days in Koh Samui.
Six days passed since my last post. I am still alive and nothing noteworthy was happening. After leaving Koh Phi Phi I was a few days in Patong Beach again. I did not want to miss the Germany vs. Serbia match. So I took the easy way because I knew where I could watch the match.
It is not difficult to find a place to watch the match. It gets interesting if you like to have some people around you and a running english commentary.
The most impressive thing I did in Patong was getting a massage from fishes.
It is very tickling, but all the other tourists seeing me sitting there where really annoying.
I left the Beach for Phuket Town where I was staying for three nights. I met Julian from Kiwi Basecamp there and now we are travelling together for a few days. I did not much these days. Mostly chilling at the fantastic hostel, including one full day watching only DVDs. I finally saw The Beach. ;) Late at night we watched Ghana loosing against and Germany and had only 3 hours of sleep.
On the 24th we left for Koh Samui. Minivan, Bus, Ferry, Minivan and all in all eleven hours later we arrived in Chaweng Beach in our hotel. Important things first we booked the ferry to the full moon party on Koh Pha Ngan. I was feeling a bit like doing a tour the next day. So while Julian was chilling I went on an adventure trip yesterday.
This one was really not that good at first. I was the only one on my tour. It was so boring. There were 5 english girls from our hotel going on nearly the same tour, they did some elephant riding while I was doing some zip lining. That was the only difference. I so don't get it, why I needed to do the morning completely alone.
First stop was at the grandpapa and grandmother rock. Some rocks that look like cock and pussy. I thought these formations where a bit nicer:
Next was a mummified monk. I don't know if I was allowed to make pictures, so I did none.
Now I was really bored. Two guides who did not speak english and me aching for some company. At least I got to do the cable rides.
Even upside down:
Next were some animal shows. Elephant, Monkey and Crocodile. I would not say that I have seen better, but felt lonely and thought that this all is a waste of time.
The obligatory waterfall came next:
This was the last stop alone. They let me join the other group and finally it was getting better. We went to a meditation glade with very nice stone figures.
Next place was actually funny... The others got out of the truck with some sense of awe while I got out of it made the automatic pictures and thought another lookout. Maybe it is really enough. I should stop doing touristic stuff and I should search for a kind of normality. I really long for it at the moment. The day watching DVDs in Phuket was my best day this week so far.
Our guide asked us, while we were having lunch if we like to visit another waterfall. It would extend our tour and it is a waterfall where only locals are going and almost no tourists. We said yes. Ok. The others said yes and I said nothing. ;) But it was actually the best part of the day.
We were really in the jungle and where hiking for like an hour up and down the waterfall.
After this we went for a long 4WD drive along the ridge of the hills on Samui.
We had a sunset.
And finally seeing the big buddha statue.
We arrived at half past 8 at the hostel. Another 10 hour day. I was so tired. So I sleeped in today. It is around noon and I will be walking around a few hours before we are of to the full moon party.

Koh Phi Phi
I need to catch up again, but it gets easy, when life slows down to a crouch. Wednesday I left Patong Beach for Koh Phi Phi. Hopefully finding a nicer place to be.
My short trip with minivan and ferry should take me like three hours to get to the island of P.P. (spell PeePee). At least I thought so, that was when my odyssey started. My minivan pickup was late and I began to wonder, why I needed to be ready at 7:30am. The reception explained that because of the low-season there is only one ferry in the morning. That was such a lie.
When I finally got picked up I wondered if I will be able to make the ferry. All other people on the minivan where heading for different destinations. A while later it was nearing ferry departure time and I was still somewhere on Phuket and not anywhere near the ferry terminal. So I asked. The driver explained to me in his broken english: You are going to Krabi and catching the ferry from there.
Big surprise. Four hour minivan drive to Krabi. Going all the way around the bay. So stupid. I resigned to my fate. Four hours later, I was waiting at the minivan terminal for another hour before I got transferred to the Krabi Ferry Terminal, but only after I payed another 450Baht for the ferry ticket. Patience, young Padawan, I thought to myself. I got scammed, while booking through my hostel. It definitely feels that way.
Another hour waiting at the terminal. Two more hours later I finally arrived in P.P. and was greeted with a nice totally touristic and laid back town. Everything can be reached with bicycle, feet or boat. There are no cars on P.P. and I doubt that there is a petrol station. It reminded me a lot of Boracay, albeit smaller and more like a cheap copy. Especially when I got to the main beach.
I relaxed the afternoon away after being on the road for nearly nine hours. While waiting for dinner at breakers. My irish roommates from Penang showed up. I had the hope to meet them here, but I was everything else but sure, that we can do it. The evening company was secured. :) We went to the banana bar, a rooftop bar with a really chilly atmosphere. There I was shown, what tourists are drinking here at night time. Buckets. Small buckets where the vendor drops a full bottle of hard alcoholics and fills the rest up with the softdrink of choice. I never bought one or drank from one. ;) But I got drunk just from watching the other people buy that stuff.
While waiting on the streets the girls and I heard someone calling my name. A look to the right really got a surprise out of me. Clint, one of the americans, I met in Tanah Rata and George Town, was here to. We decided to meet the next evening, because they where fairly tired from their day of rock climbing.
At the banana bar, there was some fun involved while playing and writing with blacklight color.
After that beach party. Dancing and jumping around at the beach and taking a fully clothed swim in the dark. To bad that someone stole Lynn's purse, while we where all watching the nightswimming.
I woke the next morning to the steady sound of a tropical rainshower. Nice. I wanted to make a tour on Thursday. The tour was not starting before noon, but I haven't had high hopes, when I switched my accommodation. I wanted to be with more people and changed from single room to dorm room and 10 euros a night to 5 euros a night. The room definitely felt that way. But it was the only dorm I found.
The tour was on. :) The sun was sometimes shining and we had a lot of fun. The other tourists where a bit jealous when I told them that I am travelling since December, because they were on their yearly vacation. Especially tough was the irish couple. A two weeks vacation, where they spent almost five days for transportation.
First stop. Monkey beach. Ok. Done that several times. I took no pictures. Next please.
Second stop. Snorkeling with sharks. That should have been a new one for me. I did not see any sharks though. Maybe they have seen me and thought, there must be something more tasty to eat. Next time I am doing something like a vacation I will have a waterproof camera.
Third stop. Cliff jumping. Yeehaa. I did it. Another jumping, diving thing done. :) It was the smallest cliff. Seven meter high, but no way I am gonna drop myself 20 meter into almost black water like our guide.
Then we were off to Koh Phi Phi Lee. A small island next to Koh Phi Phi Don where all the action is.
Fourth stop. Swimming in a lagoon and lunch. Really nice. I can't remember if I have ever done something like that.
Fifth stop. Going to the beach of the movie The Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio. Nice beach. ;) Mayabay is the name, if someone cares to know.
After having a few hours there, we where on a small boat in a little bit of a rough sea and it was not funny.
I stopped taking pictures and fought a long while not to puke. ;) We skipped the cloudy sunset.
The rest of the last days can be recounted on fast forward, because not much was happening. I met with Wes and Clint the next day. Banana Bar and Beach Party again. I left Koh Phi Phi on Friday because it was getting to expensive for my taste and I haven't found a nice laid back backpackers place, where you can just chill instead of going to parties.
So Phuket again and more importantly Patong again. I so don't know why I went back here. But after my experience with the way to P.P. I wanted to make sure, that I am at a place where I can watch the game. I did not like the idea to miss it, because I was still on the road or searching for an appropriate venue.
My facebook comment after the game was like this:
Yesterday I was on the chilling mission. I finally found a cinema and watched the A-Team. Fun and sometimes hilarious but never as good as the original. Two more days here in Phuket, till Julian from Kiwi Basecamp shows up and Thursday we will be leaving for Koh Samui and the Full Moon Party on Saturday.
Don't expect any blog entries. Not much is happening right now.

From the last evening in George Town to Phuket and the Khai 3 Islands Tour
Again a few days since the last post. Those of you having Facebook know of my ranting about Patong Beach, but I need to make an update for the rest.
Being in George Town was probably the highlight of my Malaysia trip. I met so many interesting new people and we had a blast with the public viewings. OK. It is Asia, you won't find the atmosphere like in Europe and the temperature is slightly higher, but nevertheless every bar has a screen and you are watching soccer.
After the Saturday evening game, my roommates where still asleep when I went to the airport. David a german guy, who was travelling with Jonas and Stefan, went with me to the airport. We had the same flight and both of us where flying because we are needing the 30 day visa instead of the 14 day land-based travel visa.
It is really interesting how fast groups form and split up again, only to be reformed a few days later in a different location. Because David had not booked a hotel in Phuket, he decided to join me, while I was going to the Bodega in Patong Beach. Sometimes I really need to check my sanity and I definitely need to inform myself more about the places I am going to be.
I read about Patong Beach that it would be a party location and on the website of my hostel, that we are not allowed to bring any overnight guests. Sounds good for me, because I was sleeping in a dorm room and it could get a bit annoying if some people do bedsport while I try to sleep.
What I did not take into account while booking was that I should think about prostitution and the according sex tourism. So far I have been to fairly high price countries. Even Malaysia is high price compared to other countries in South East Asia. Patong Beach is one of the famous destinations for single old male travellers who are looking for certain kind of fun. It is a very hard contrast for me. Just looking at the beach you see a lot of guys relaxing around and almost no woman.
After checking in David and I went for lunch. On the way to a suitable restaurant and walking around afterwards. You normally get past all those massage parlors. The woman and maybe not womans are really aggressive. I was grabbed at my arm several times despite saying NO. On the other hand it was a nice training of my Hapkido skills. Just moving the arm in a certain way without any force and I was free again. ;) Still I was kinda pissed off. I so thought I am wrong here.
David and myself decided that we can't stand whole days in Patong, but the hostel is payed and it is normal in Thailand that there will be no refunds. So we were starting to plan a day trip for the next day.
In the evening we convinced our roommate Laura and another guy to join us for dinner. The power of a female bodyguard. ;) I was walking ahead like always, Laura a short step behind me and then David and the other guy. I glanced back a few times and saw that the guys still had problems with the arm grabbing while I was not bothered. Maybe I am looking Asian enough and that means I am poor. Finally after Laura started to make angry faces at the massage girls we found our way along the street without any problems at all. :)
First watching Ghana and Serbia in a nice bar. Then going to bed at 2300. Getting up again at 0100 to watch Germany against OZ. The atmosphere in Penang was far better, but now I have seen the best team so far. The Aussi guy in the seat in front of me looked kinda depressed the whole game. I should have spent him a beer.
The next day around lunchtime we where picked up for a snorkeling and swimming tour to three islands. At least two of the islands are a complete waste of time. I don't want to know how crowded those islands are when it is actually season and not the off-season like now.
The snorkeling from the boat at the third island Khai Nui was really good, except for the damn jelly fishes. A lot of my skin was burning afterwards and the jelly fishes where easily coconut size.
To summarize: Everything I did was far to touristic for my taste. I need to get back to the backpackers life. I will be leaving for Koh Phi Phi tomorrow and hopefully meet my irish roommates from Pulau Penang again. Before that I will have a bit of shopping here in Patong Beach and then maybe a night out. But perhaps only going to the bar on the other side of the street and watching football. To bad that I am all alone this day. David is leaving already for Koh Phi Phi and Krabi. Perhaps we meet again at the Full Moon Party on the island next to Koh Samui.

George Town Heritage Trail (Day 2)
At the end of day 1 from the George Town Heritage Trail we went to a few bars.
Talking the evening away until we finally went to the Boom Boom Bar. Where we watched the amazing Boom Boom Got Talent Show. I haven't seen that much rubbish in a long while. The best actor was not even a contestant. One guy adopted us and did all the famous Michael Jackson dances for us. We had a 1.5 hours private dance show.
The next morning it was Good Byes again. This time the canadian girls left, while I went for the second part of the Heritage Trail.
I was crossing of sites I had already seen. I have not shot pictures of all the sites, but sometimes it was not worth it anymore. Just another temple, townhouse, cathedral or museum. I so need to do something different. I am looking now for Thai Massage Courses. I have a recommendation from Thomas, but it is fairly out of the way. I so did not want to go to those cities. Maybe I have more luck in Phuket.
Here are some pictures of the Heritage Trail:
Strange but true... Jonas and Stefan walked into my hostel again this afternoon. I so did not expect them, but somehow you always cross ways again.
In the evening we went to the night market for dinner, before we went to the bar for our first public viewing experience of the worldcup. South Africa against Mexico was really an exciting game. The teams are not that good and that is probably the reason why it was so fascinating. It was nearly as good as a public viewing in Germany. This is the way to go Malaysia.

George Town Heritage Trail (Day 1)
Yeeha. My first real day in George Town. After the really hard and long day yesterday I felt like sleeping in. I got at eight o'clock and was having breakfast. While making plans with Wes, Clint and Ed for the evening the girls showed up and after some talking we decided to walk the Heritage Trail together.
The George Town Heritage Trail is a walk that passes several older buildings in the World Heritage and Old City Center of George Town. Meleka and George Town are both included in the World Heritage of the UNESCO.
Somehow I was made tourguide and leader again. Ok... first I was fighting this important post with hands and feet. But later I resigned to my fate and it was actually quite fun.
We where walking down Chinatown, to our first spot. The World Heritage Museum. Here I got a better map and started guiding the group from spot to Spot.
Several sights were closed. But we could make nice pictures of other places.
We finally reached the highlight of our tour:
The temple of the Khoo Kongsi Clan was part of the movie set of Anna and the King. It is really impressive with loads of small details and if you are up to it, you probably can spent a whole day just looking and searching for new details.
In the Cheah Kongsi Clan temple, we found a nice small bonsai tree.
Then we decided to have lunch. Like always it takes some effort for a group to come to a solution for the lunch problem, but it was worth it. We had a great lunch, before continuing our journey through the time and visiting some more places, before our group split up. Ed is still walking around somewhere. While the girls and I took Trishaws back to the lodge.
While I was starting my blog entries, the girls were going to the Botanical Spice Garden and a Dinner Show with lunch. They are leaving tomorrow, like Wes and Clint. Ed stays till Saturday. Company may be secured, but it is again time to say Good Bye to someone. It really gets annoying at times.
In the meanwhile I have booked my Hostel for Phuket and I am getting ready to leave Malaysia. I still have two more days in Georgetown and on Penang. Only half of the Heritage Trail is done and there are several other interesting things to see, like the snake temple, Botanical Spice Garden or the beaches. Maybe I am doing a jungle trail again.
