Botanical Garden and Kick Scooterholic

Saturday. I needed to do some sightseeing again. My roommates wanted to go to and on we went to the botanical garden. It was hot and humid and soon the sweat was dripping. Maybe we should have taken a Taxi or the bus for the last few hundred meters from the MRT station. It would not have helped because even in the botanical garden the weather was hot.

We wanted to have a look at the swanlake, the ginger garden and the orchid garden. Here are some impressions.

It was to hot. We skipped the Orchid Garden because of that and they wanted to have an insane amount of money as entrance fee.

In the afternoon we went to Starbucks and split our group. I went for a bad massage and the girls went shopping. I needed to get myself prepared for my second Kick Scooter Tour Experience. ;)

Michael changed the route a bit from last time and those thingys are simply put a great workout, if you are going for five hours.

I like Singapore, but it was time to move on and I will be back in July according to my momentary plans. I found myself going with bus from Singapore to Melaka in Malaysia yesterday. Today I will explore a bit and decide if I am gonna stay another day and night or if I am going to Kuala Lumpur tomorrow.

Btw. Malaysia is cheaper. I now pay only 4 euros the night. The only thing I am missing is a real western toilet. Still alive and rocking. Over and out.

Awesome Singapore

I did not do much yesterday and today. Mostly chilling and having a bit of fun. Yesterday morning I went with two girls from the scooter experience to the asian civilisations museum. It was really interesting. During the first room I somehow lost them.

I was really slow in reading and playing around with the exhibition stuff and thought they were somewhere in front of me. After like two hours and me finishing all interesting bits for me. I finally found them in the second room. They needed four more hours to complete the whole museum while I was drinking an iced chocolate at Starbucks.

In the evening a group of scooterists went out to hit some clubs. The first one was not that great, but the second one was great. RnB is normally not my music, but nevertheless I had fun. So at five o'clock this morning we finally went to the MRT (Subway). It was still closed. Nearly 1.5 hours later while a few of us where sleeping in front of the closed gate, Jani and I went around the building and found another open entrance. ;) We would have waited a few more hours before they would finally open our gate.

Lucky us. Breakfast and then finally to sleep. Next objective after getting finally up was chilling at the beach. We went to Sentosa Island. It is an artificially modified island, where they placed sand from Australia to give the imagination of natural beach.

*snip*

This is the part where I normally hit the publish button. Somehow I missed it. ;) Now two days later I wanted to write a new post. I will just append to this one now.

The beach was really bad. The water was to dirty and to much trash was floating beneath the small waves. But we had some fun playing volleyball in the water. Again I was trying to keep the group moving, but I had big help from our planner. I will be a tourist guide in my next life. I so know it.

After dining in Chinatown we went back to the hostel in Little India. Quick shower and then sitting at the front porch of our hostel and playing UNO. Of the three rounds I won two. I am sometimes a really lucky backpacker.

A good nights sleep later. We were chilling the morning away. The girls writing picture postcards while I was finishing Servant of the Empire for the third time. I really like Midkemia/Kelewan. Hopefully sometime in the future someone will make a few movies.

In the afternoon we went for a small coffeeshop in the arab quarters Kampong Glam. Where we said good bye to the boys. Jonas and Stefan are going to Malaysia next. Maybe I catch them again in Malakka on Sunday or shortly after that in Kuala Lumpur.

Before Dinner the Nina, Jani and me went to Chinatown shopping. I saw a few things I thought where nice for me, but I better wait for Malaysia. I will probably save money there. Dinner in the foodcourt for 1.5 Euros was nice. We went back to the hostel, where I said good bye to the girls, who are going back to Germany.

Saying good bye to travel mates sucks. Last week saying good bye to the Groovy Grape Team, yesterday my Kick-Scooter friends. Tomorrow when I am leaving for Malaysia my new roommates.

But not yet. I will go with them to the botanical garden in a few minutes. One more day of fun, before saying bye bye.

Singapore on foot and on kick-scooter.

Oh my gosh. Singapore.

If you ask me right now. That is the city to stay for a long while and probably working and living here. If you ask me tomorrow I definitely like to be somewhere else.

I have been here for two nights and I am thinking about extending over the weekend, before leaving either to Malaysia (easy) or going to Cambodia (a bit of stuff to organize). Singapores greeting was remarkable. Hot and humid, totally different from the desert in Australia right now. I felt a bit like coming home. If you like the overused expression multi cultural you may simply say Singapore instead.

Not much was happening the first evening. I got here at around half past nine and now I am another 1.5 hours nearer to Germany. The long travel home from New Zealand is showing it's signs. Only 6 hours difference now.

Yesterday I decided to take it easy, walk around and do a bit of shopping. Singapore really is the shopping capital of the world. After getting out of my hostel in Little India I walked down some roads till I found the temple of Kali. I was not so sure if I am allowed to take pictures and before I receive the wrath of the goddess, I rather forfeit taking pictures.
Von 20100525-Singapore

After that it was a long walk in the tropical heat till I reached a Starbucks and made a cooldown stop. After Starbucks I continued on to Orchard Road the shopping centre of SE Asia. Ever heard of Mall Hopping. That is exactly what I was doing. Going down Orchard several kilometers while hopping from mall to mall. I did some pictures outside too.

I finally have new shoes and two new t-shirts.

I reached my hostel at four in the afternoon. Two hours of relaxing my aching feets, before I went on a free kick-scooter city tour that is organized by the InnCrowd Backpackers Hostel.
Von 20100525-Singapore

Amazing I did not think you could have that much fun with these things. The group was awesome, too. Annoyingly many germans again. I got to see almost everything in the city and funny enough now I know a few germans who are talking english with me. ;)

Five hours travelling around the city. I was so tired. But I won't like to miss out on this. If you ever go to Singapore as backpacker. Go to the Inncrowd and take their kick-scooter tour. By the way I did it again. Most of the people remembered my name by the end of the trip. Is it really a good thing?

On another note I should have bought the Lonely Planet for SE Asia on a Shoestring here in Singapore for like 34.73 Singapore Dollars. I payed in Auckland 71 NZD. It is so unfair. ;)

A few days in The Alice.

Our Rockpatrol-Guide Robert greeted us in Alice Springs with the words: "Welcome to the Alice". I kinda like this sound. My days in Australia are counted and I will be leaving in a few hours to Singapore. Right now I am sitting at Darwin's Airport and waiting to be allowed to clear customs.

But back to thursday evening. After arriving in Alice Springs we were greeted with cold air and some rain. All in all the weather in Alice was not that great. It is still the desert but this year Alice received more rain than the few previous years together. Strange things happening right now. I did not expect sand dunes like Robert insisted of this desert. But still being in the green Red Center of Australia is a bit strange.

After checking in we took a taxi and went to Annie's Place to have a nice evening with our other fellow Rock Patrollers. After six days it was the last evening spent together. A few met up the next evening while others where No Shows.

On Friday Morning I wrote a lot of my previous Blog Entries till I finally was hungry enough. Antoine and myself went to find something to eat. We were greeted by a small provincial town. Surprisingly I did not expect a bustling city, but with the reputation I really hoped for something more. We walked around almost half an hour before we settled for the first cafe we encountered.

The most surprising sight in Alice are all those Aborighinis. The poor people have nothing to do but to buy alcoholic beverages and drink themselves to oblivion, even while there is a strict alcohol ban in the central town. I considered them somehow dangerous. This is really the first time I had this feeling of being at the edge and being ready to do something like running or defending my way out of there.

But there are a few nice things too.
Von 20100521-AliceSprings

I am still more than 14k km from home. Somewhere at the other end of the world. After breakfast Antoine went to the library while I was trying to do some shopping. On my quest for new shoes (failure) I went into a Didgeridoo Shop, that is owned by one of the internationally acclaimed masters of the instrument. I forgot his name. After having a quick peak around I was about to leave again, when Stefan, a swiss guy I met on the beginning of Rock Patrol, intercepted me and said "Don't leave yet, Klaus. There will be an Didgeridoo Workshop for free in a couple of minutes." Nothing better to do I stayed. I so don't get it how to get my lips vibrating that the instrument gets nice clean sound. And the breathing exercises somehow are really challenging my mind. Tough work to master this instrument even when you get all basics in an half hour workshops. I had fun and this was a really nice experience.

After that I was walking around in a city where I see strange sights like the Todd River.
Von 20100521-AliceSprings

They say that You are considered to be a local if you see the Todd River running water at least twice in your life.

In the evening a couple of us went for the new Robin Hood movie. What a waste of time. Nice Hollywood Movie but otherwise there are a lot of Robin Hood movies out there and this is one of the bad ones.

After a quick Dinner we went to the Bojangles Saloon. The single most important party point in Alice. There where several highlights. Dancing the night away with our Rock Patrol Group and losing one of our members to the doorstoppers. They threw him out, because puking in the toilet is frowned upon. The security was really fast with getting people back on to the streets. Even a brawling was broken up rather fast. While I was watching and getting a bit tense about how we will get to the hostel in one piece, the others where still having fun and dancing. After a few minutes I just decided to stop worrying. Die fast, die young. ;)

The special thing about the Saloon is, that they have a webcam. And you guys at home can buy your mates in the saloon a few drinks while watching them partying and thanks to the different timezone, being at university or work.

We left around half past three in the morning (2100 CEST). After saying goodbye to Win (he slept in another hostel) we went to ours without any problems. Win on the other hand caught a few from a couple a Aborighinis. He should have taken a taxi. Or at least walked in a group.

After sleeping in on Saturday we made our way to the museum of the Royal Flying Doctors Service.
Von 20100521-AliceSprings

It was interesting but it barely kept us occupied for half an hour. After finally convincing myself that I wanted to cook again for a crowd I convinced the others and a few us went shopping for one of my Nasi Goreng variations. For those of You who have eaten my cooked stuff, let me put it that way: It was one of the worst dinners I ever made. (The rice was just to wet in the end.)

But somehow all of them liked it. Maybe to many evenings eating Pasta with Tomato Sauce will do that to you. They treated that ordeal like it was a feast. I still don't know what I should make of this.

Sunday we finally went up Anzac Hill and having a view of Alice from above.

I am happy and sad. Happy that I am leaving Australia today and sad that I am not seeing my constant company of the last ten days anymore. Most of them move on to Darwin or will end up together in Cairns, while I am going to SE Asia. But I can't take Australia any longer. I really like to see something totally different and spending less money than while travelling OZ.

Australia. Been there, done that, moving on. ;)

Rockpatrol (Day 6) Kings Canyon

I so don't believe it. It was still dark outside. And after a quick breakfast and a miserable night in swags, sleeping bags and moderate rain (At least my sleeping bag and swag where wet at the end of the night. Think about this, we are still in the desert and it is damn raining.) we went for the Kings Canyon hike. 3.5 hours walking in the rain.
Von 20100520-KingsCanyon

It is going up here. You see the red stairs between all the green?
Von 20100520-KingsCanyon
To bad that pictures are not that impressive.

Somehow I managed to put myself as focus point of this group. A lot of jokes where directed at me and then when we reached the Garden of Eden and the fresh water hole. A few said we go swimming if Klaus goes swimming.
Von 20100520-KingsCanyon

So I started to strip, but some still beat me to the water.
Von 20100520-KingsCanyon
Von 20100520-KingsCanyon

It was freaking cold. After a few minutes you were sure, that you are going to lose some of your toes. And the water felt like tiny little needles the whole time.
Von 20100520-KingsCanyon

Maybe half of our group got into the water. All the guys except Robert and 4 of the girls.

After drying up it started to rain. But we needed to walk at least another 3km.
Von 20100520-KingsCanyon
Von 20100520-KingsCanyon

Amazing hike and it would have been better with blue sky but at least it was not cold and definitely not to hot.

We arrived in Alice Springs yesterday and that ended the rockpatrol. I will explore the city now. But I believe there is not much to see. Three more nights, till I leave for Singapore.

Rockpatrol (Day 5) Uluru sunrise, Uluru basewalk

Surprise this time we were able to sleep a bit longer because we camped at the lookout. So no need to stand for watching the sunrise.
Von 20100519-LastDayUluru

It was raining a bit and we got a great rainbow too.
Von 20100519-LastDayUluru
Von 20100519-LastDayUluru

After the sunrise we went to Uluru. It is discouraged to climb this sacred place but this time it was simply forbidden because of the rain. It is simply to dangerous.

Von 20100519-LastDayUluru
Do you see the red and green in the picture. Imagine I would have had a better camera.

These are essentially my last pictures of the day. A lot of stuff is forbidden to take pictures from. Sacred place and taking pictures wouldn't honor the believe of the aborighinal people.
So my last picture is from another sacred place.
Von 20100519-LastDayUluru

After lunch we got on the road again. Destination Kings Creek Station, our basecamp for the trip to Kings Canyon.

Rockpatrol (Day 4) Uluru sunrise, Valley of the Winds, Uluru sunset

Yeeha... The early bird catches the flu and a sunrise.

We got up far to early again. Fate of tourists all around the world. Finally holidays and you still get up to do amazing stuff.

We went for the sunrise lookout spot on Uluru while it was still damn cold. Equipped with our sleeping bags we stood there and were waiting for the sun to make its appearance.

After breakfast in the carpark we went to Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) where we would hike the Valley of the Winds before lunch. A three hour hike through an area that is as old and sacred as Uluru.

By the way it looks hotter than it actually was. It is still the desert but it was early in the morning and we have now nearly winter in Australia. It is raining in the desert and the red center turns green.

After that we went first to the sunset spot to make group picture and then to the information center.
Von 20100518-KataTjutaAndUluru

I won a free snickers at the information center. :)

The ever changing colors throughout the sunset of Uluru are simply great.
