Cycle Tour ( Day 6) Haast to Fox Glacier (121km)

Another stupid stunt of mine... I wanted to stop in Lake Paringa. But could not reserve a bed for me. So I needed to move on. Now I am a day early but already in Fox Glacier.

Cycle Tour New Zealand auf einer größeren Karte anzeigen

The landscape differed a lot during the day. First there was the ever present rainforrest. The kilometers flew past me.

Von 20100227-HaastToFoxGlacier

Until I reached Knights Point. Nice View on the ocean and still enough nerves to stop and take pictures. Even talking to bikers who where going in the other direction.

Von 20100227-HaastToFoxGlacier

It should have been my only big climb till I reach Fox Glacier. Who ever provided the information lied. After the Point it went downhill to Lake Moeraki.

Von 20100227-HaastToFoxGlacier

I have had a dream... No, I will not go MLK on you now. It was more like a hallucination in 2002 shortly before I was admitted into a filipinian hospital because of the dehydration fever. I saw a jungle rainforrest setting exactly like the picture above. A lake was before the green walled mountains. The only thing missing in the picture is the yellow american schoolbus. I still need an explanation for that, but I partly saw my vision again today. ;)

After that I should have reached the other Lake. Lake Paringa and there should have been a lodge. But it is saturday and the lake is famous for fishing so there was no vacancy. 66km more to go. I was feeling well and thought I can do that. (There are easier ways to kill oneself.) I knew that the next accommodation would be in Fox. So it was either stay or move on.

The landscaped changed from natural rainforrest to farms and back the whole way to Fox Glacier. Midway my left thumb started to refuse working. I still can't grip anything with the left. I hope it is just overuse. We will see tomorrow.

The next stop for lunch was Bruce Bay.

Von 20100227-HaastToFoxGlacier

Naturally I stopped at the wrong place and missed all the other people shooting pictures at the right place. If there is a right place. I was getting bored and aggressive in the meanwhile. Still so many clicks to go.

The highlight of the day was in the middle of nowhere. No. No Bikini babes for me. But:

Von 20100227-HaastToFoxGlacier

Don't know why. Don't know how. I think it is a campervan thingy. But it made my day.

I am in Fox Glacier now. I can't use my left hand properly. To tired. I am one day early. So I will be staying here for 2 nights. The next leg will be a short one. 30km. I am just moving to Franz Josef Glacier.

Have fun and stay tuned.

Cycle Tour ( Day 5) From Wanaka to Haast (142km)

Sometimes I really think that my intelligence was an imagination and I never really did the university degree. Why else would I torture myself with 142km of cycling and trying again to defeat a pass.

Cycle Tour New Zealand auf einer größeren Karte anzeigen

I got up at 6.30am. At 7 something was sunrise and I wanted to use every available second where the sun is shining. So I left beautiful Wanaka.

Von 20100225-WanakaToHaast

My route guided me through plain where I could observe part of the sunrise.

Von 20100225-WanakaToHaast

After that I was bound to travel the side of Lake Hawea for a little while.

Von 20100225-WanakaToHaast

The worst part was the race against the time. I could not wait anywhere and needed to be always moving. I was really hating this part of the trip, because I had headwind again. The forecast predicted a change to sw but I was out of luck. So I fought the wind and myself because it was the first time I wanted to be back at the office and do some stupid coding. Maybe switching my problem with Jans Oracle and Eclipse affection.

I went on and met a lot of cyclers going in the other direction. Always with light equipment. Maybe this should have told me something. The next part was switching lakes.

Von 20100225-WanakaToHaast

The wind was still blowing from north and I was going there. In Makarora I thought about dropping out and taking a break for the day. It is like 65km and the next day going for the pass would have been easier. But no. I was on time. So I moved on.

The landscape changed to a valley like landscape and I was travelling to my doom.

Von 20100225-WanakaToHaast

Haast Pass. 600m high. I needed to be there at 1500 to be on time and reaching Haast at 1800. I did not make it. 1615 I reached the pass.

Von 20100225-WanakaToHaast

I was irritated, because my sunglasses where fogging and it was rather wet. Everything was wet. Even my brakes. It took me a while to realize I was now in a rainforrest. This was the best part of today and easily the most scenic of my whole trip. I have never been to a rainforrest and got to do a really challenging downhill run.

Von 20100225-WanakaToHaast

I did not take many pictures after that, because I had to much fun speeding the last 63km away. After the first three missed waterfalls I did not care about them anymore. There where so many of them and each had something different to offer. It was by far the best experience on the bike. Can You believe it? Rainforrest? Whoa!!!

I reached Haast and my hostel at 8 o'clock. I thought several times that this city is an illusion and now I am in really small village for two nights before I move up the west coast. Preferrably Fox Glacier. But I don't know if I want to do a 100km leg again.

I am alive and still rocking. I have had the most beautiful bikerun of my life and would do that again, if someone carries me up to Haast Pass.

Cycle Tour ( Day 4) From Queenstown to Wanaka via Crowns Range

Bad Internet connection. So Pictures will follow later.

After the five day break in Queenstown I am on the bike again.

Cycle Tour New Zealand auf einer größeren Karte anzeigen

I thought starting early gives me headstart on the traffic. So I got up at 5 o'clock after sleeping very little. I guess I was nervous, because I did not know if I could do the Zigzag in direction of the Crowns Range.

As it turned out, the Zigzag was the least of my problems. First of all I want to thank all the Kiwi Basecampers for encouraging me that I can do it. Next time if I ask Your opinion on a route please say: Yes, You can do that, but You are insane.

I arrived half past seven at the Zigzag. It is really impressive if you are standing at the bottom and know, that you need to get up there. I thought I need to do the Zigzag and the following climbs till ten o'clock to avoid most of the traffic. But as it showed later on, the traffic was not a problem at all. Except those wickedcampers. They always try to kill me.

Moving up the Zigzag was no fun. Shortly after beginning I needed to get off the bike and started pushing. I am not fit enough for these types of climbs. Near the top I got a cramp in my right upper leg too. So here I was. Definitely not the right kind of guy at the definitely wrong place. Backward is like giving up and moving forward is like really hating myself, defying and challenging nature.

I made it to the top of the Zigzag. When an older Lady told me at the lookout, that I must be very ambitious. I replied that I am only very stupid. I believe I made her day.

After the two km Zizag there would be like 15 km more climbing till I reach the pass. So I moved on. Sometimes really cycling sometimes only pushing the bike. I was getting more tired by the minute. I was cursing all people and myself. I really wanted to know why I am hating myself that much. I still don't have an answer.

On the final very good lookout onto Queenstown. A kiwi-guy said to me, that I am nearly there only like two more turns and then it would go down the whole way till Wanaka. At that moment I already used up two of my two and half liter of shitty tasting electrolytes, and I knew when I am at the top there will be no big celebration or bikini girls trying to give the whole torture any meaningful purpose. No way back only moving forward.

As I thought kiwis can't count. It was more like 6 turns and an additional 100m in height, before I finally made the peak. The only bikini girl there was an elderly lady (not in a bikini) who high-fived me for my accomplishment and took a picture, before she set off again down the hill to Queenstown, where she would wait for her cycling husband. The poor guy came from Wanaka. After wishing him well and telling him to be careful, because my way up or his way down will be really dangerous. Fast changing curves mixed with really steep passages.

Some statistics:
12 km till the peak.
800 m difference in height.
Highest sealed road of New Zealand.
2 liters of electrolytes (shitty taste).
4 energy bars.
and don't tell anyone 3.5 hours.

After the break I got on my bike again. One sign said 40 km downhill. Exactly the distance to Wanaka. It lied. Or like all Kiwis it had a distorted reality.

It was fast moving very windy road. I had nearly the whole 40 km strong headwind and the sun shining in my face. And only 500 ml water left. It was by far the most amazing landscape I have encountered so far. I did not take any pictures, because I needed to keep battling the headwind. And when I was in the drive I simply would not stop for really nice attractions. Several historic sites from the old gold digger times flew past me. I believe the bike is a challenging opportunity to see New Zealand but You will miss a lot of the stuff there is to see.

I reached the purple cow at half past two and was in the expected time frame. Half an hour earlier than I told the hostel via reservation. I have a day off now. Tomorrow I will walk a while through Wanaka. Take some pictures and relax. Then I am on the bike again. 150 km to Haast. Without a big climb. In Haast I will reach the sea level again I believe. And then it goes up the west coast. At the moment I am thinking about taking the bus at Greymouth to Nelson and doing some cycling up the coast from Nelson. I will change my cycling behaviour and adding the bus at appropriate locations to make it more fun for myself.

Btw. I am not feeling accomplishment of any kind. Yes, I did it. I did the Bungy Jump, too. But really there is nothing in my emotions that is telling me: This my friend is special or you did well. I am not fishing for compliments either. I pushed my boundary again and went to my limit. But there is no joy or glory in it.

Been there, done that, moved on. How sad is that?

Queenstown yesterday and Canyoning today.

Somehow I can stand Queenstown only because I do something all the time. This city is so touristic and annoying I believe that there are no Kiwis living here anymore. Otherwise I like Queenstown. The sun is shining and I have a feeling of summer.

Yesterday I went with the gondola up a hill and did some sighseeing.

Von 20100220-Queenstown

Von 20100220-Queenstown

I was not impressed by the bungy site The Ledge. I believe it will be an experience when you actually jump at night. But the staff-girl told me, that I need to be back in winter for that experience. *brrr*

So I did not jump again. Instead I decided to go canyoning today. You know: Somehow survive your way through a canyon. ;) Jumping, abseiling, rappeling, gliding, swimming and walking. Walking is the most dangerous part of this experience.

Those of you who know how confident I am in water will be proud of me. :)

So I am a bit disappointed. I wanted to go an helicopter ride plus montain bike trip tomorrow. But the guy in the store told me, that it probaly is not a good idea, because I never did a real mountain bike trip before. And it is fairly expensive with 300 something NZD. So tomorrow I will prepare my next bicycle leg from Queenstown to Wanaka. 15km climb and 40 km downhill or something like that.

1. Mal: Drinking in a bar with minus 5°

So instead of meeting again with this girl from the bungy jump I went with my canadian roommate to the pub crawl. Four bars, four drinks, 25 NZD. But the special thing about this one is, that you get to enter the minus 5° bar. Normally their entry fee would be like 31 NZD.

Von 20100219-Minus5Degree

One of the girls we met, was strange but I believe working in a research station in antarctica does that to you. She was next to Sean the least impressed while I was surprisingly not really freezing to death.

Von 20100219-Minus5Degree

But Sean was really tough.
Von 20100219-Minus5Degree

The glasses where out of ice, too. With my second drink my glas started to leak.

1. Mal: Bungy Jumping 134m and Canyon Swing Nevis Arc

I don't know what to write. I am still trying to come to terms with the both things. I really did it.

The wait for the jump.

Von 20100219-BungyDay

The swing.

Von 20100219-BungyDay

I have the videos too. But I need to figure out, where I am gonna put them first.

I'll try a description of the jump.

3 2 1. Here I go... It was far to fast and to soon over. There was this wild ride down and than the really smooth catch from the rope. I really should not try to describe it. It was great.

The swing is far more relaxed. To bad I was spinning. So I needed to grab the handels. Otherwise I would have had far more fun. The best thing about the swing was the sightseeing afterwards. Hanging with barely a harness over a small stream gives some really great impressions of natures wonders.

Both of these activities are the most exciting things I did since coming to new zealand. I am still alive and rocking. Klaus, over and out.

Bustrip to Queenstown

Yes, I still think it was a good idea. After seeing the weather above the lakes and the possible villages, where I could have slept, I must admit that I did not miss a thing.

Ok. On the other hand the bus could have gone a bit slower for my nerves. But at least I am sure, that I don't want to be passed by this busdriver while I am on my bike. I like my life. At least sometimes.

Cycle Tour New Zealand auf einer größeren Karte anzeigen

Most tourist die from traffic accidents and not from terrorist attacks. After seeing all those roadkills the last few days I am pretty sure, that I know who is responsible. Do Kiwis have a police? Are they really watching the traffic?

Nevermind my stupid rant.

The weather was still bad in Geraldine. So the bus was welcome. We went over the hills and Burkes Pass to Lake Tekapo. Watching the tourists and tourists shops I thought. Hell no! I don't want to stay here. I had the same feeling the next lake. Lake Pukaki. With better weather I could have seen Mt. Cook. But so just clouds.

The owner of the Geraldine Hostel talked to me yesterday and made a very remarkable statement:

Once You have seen the mountain. You have seen the mountain.

It really describes my feeling about some parts of the really awesome nature of New Zealand. Sometimes I thought: Oh. Austria. Oh France. Oh Sweden. Oh Bavaria. Oh Croatia.

I believe it is really the closeness that makes New Zealand special. But I can't say that I haven't seen anything like that before.

The most interesting part for me was between Omarama and Cromwell. Going up the Lindis Pass and down to Cromwell. I would have really like to do this by bicycle. I think I could have done it too, if there was less traffic. I am mightily scared about busses right now.

So all in all. The route that I skipped right now would be interesting. But it has a lot of traffic and therefor is not really enjoyable.

The weather cleared up 10 km before Queenstown. From one meter to the next.

Von 20100217-ToQueenstown

Tomorrow I will do my Bungy Jump and the Canyon Swing. 143 m or was it 134 m? I don't really care.

Cycle Tour ( Day 3) Stuck in Geraldine

Ok. I am not on the bike today. It is raining. Not cats and dogs, but still it is not nice to be outside today. After the fantastic weather yesterday. I am fairly tired and the rain did the rest.

I did a bit of thinking yesterday and this morning. There are two passes I will need to climb to Queenstown. I will be able to do the first one (Burkes Pass) but I am unsure about Lindis Pass. Additional Problems will be, that there are no towns, hotels, no nothing to rest and the road is fairly busy. So there will always be Busses and Transporters overtaking me. It won't be a nice ride.

The route so far was not busy. It is called the inland scenic route. I had bad luck on the first day, because of the low hanging clouds. The second day was better but the route turned out to be boring, because it always went straight. Nevertheless I had fun.

After seeing the rain I decided to stay one more night in Geraldine. Is is a nice small town, with lots of greens. And a good base to go on hiking trips into the surrounding hills. But the weather does not seem to clear up anytime soon. I don't want to spent another night here.

So I worked out several options:

1. Staying another night.
2. Moving on to Fairlie or Lake Tekapo (behind Burkes Pass)
3. Going back to the coast. (Timaru and down the coast on busy Highway 1)
4. Taking the bus to Queenstown. (Skipping Lake Tekapo, Lake Pukaki and Mt. Cook)

Option 1 does not sound that great. Option 2 means going cycling in the rain and possibly not having sleeping accomodations in either town. Option 3 was on my mind a fair while. Because there are other routes to Queenstown. But it will take me maybe five extra days and I need to travel Highway 1.

So I booked the bus. They had a spot left tomorrow for my bike. Now I can look forward to make my Canyon Swing or the Bunjee Jump a little bit earlier.

Today I got news about my german tax payments. I get enough money to extend my stay in the wider world for nearly a month or two depending on where I am going to be. Taxwise it is simply not worth working more than 9 month a year. Have fun and take care. I will be staying in Queenstown for like 5 nights. And won't be doing any long travel cycling, except one or two daytours without much of the luggage.

Have fun and take care out there, while I am doing the safe option too.

Cycle Tour ( Day 2) From Methven to Geraldine

Cycle Tour New Zealand auf einer größeren Karte anzeigen

Great weather, great view on the montains.

Von 20100216-ToGeraldine

But again a real boring street. How can anyone stand it, if he has to go 30 km in one straight line without any changes? I am fairly tired now. I am not feeling as well as yesterday. Don't know if I can do the whole way to Lake Tekapo or if I need to stop in Fairlie.

I am thinking about giving up on going up to Linni Pass and just turning back to the coast. I could try to grab a coach from Dunedine to Queenstown. The other possibility is, that I try to hitchhike up the pass. Don't know if it is possible. At least I am fairly sure, that I am risking a lot with going in direction of the pass.

Cycle Tour ( Day 1) From Christchurch to Methven

I am fairly stupid but I did my first real challenge. 103 km on one day.

Cycle Tour New Zealand auf einer größeren Karte anzeigen

I was leaving far to late today. But I wanted to say goodbye to a few other people from people from Kiwi Basecamp. So many of us are leaving today that all did a little bit to much partying last night. I went to bed at 1 o'clock because I wanted to be fit enough.

So I left at 1000 and went to the post office. My backpack is now on the way to Auckland. Hopefully Tim will receive it. So my real start time is more like 1030 to 1100.

The first 50 km to Darfield a thing to my head. I was bored out of my mind. Straight street, virtually no difference in the landscape. I was already beginning to think this whole stuff is not worthwhile. In Darfield I thought I should stop for the night and read my book. You can't imagine how bored I was.

Von 20100215-ToMethven

I was thinking the whole time I should stop in the next town and just drop to bed. But there was no town coming. Always those small villages. Nothing interesting. After Darfield the road picked up and got interesting. It was hilly now and really nice Views but bad weather.

Von 20100215-ToMethven

There were several moments at 70 km where I thought that I can't go on. But there was nothing for a sleeping accomodation. So I needed to carry on. At roundabout 80 km I finally reached the highlight of the day. Rakaia Gorge.

Von 20100215-ToMethven

The other side. I need to go down on this side and back up the other side.

Von 20100215-ToMethven

I talked to a nice Kiwi Lady where I shot the pictures. She told me that I can do it. Reaching Methven I mean. There will be only one ascend and then I will be fine. She wisely did not tell me that the one ascend is like 2 km and 8%. I should have stayed at the lodge in the gorge.

I finally made it. The way from there on was mostly rolling downhill to Methven. 11 km with no effort at all.

Now I am the only guest in my hostel, because the village is a ghost town. Life is only here in winter during the ski season. So I will be on the road again tomorrow. I believe it will be somewhat around 80 km, but mostly downhill because I will be going in direction of the coast again.

1. Mal: Crusaders vs. Highlanders

Yesterday we went to our highlight of the week. Rugby: Canterbury Crusaders (Christchurch) versus the Highlanders from Dunedin. It was the first game of the new season and the first game in the completed stadium. Next year New Zealand will host the Rugby Worldchampionship.

The Crusaders are one of the best teams of the world, if not the best team. They have won the Super 12 like five times and the Super 14 two times. If you were comparing it to football/soccer they are like Barcelona or Real Madrid during their best times.

Some of the worlds best players are playing for the Crusaders. But I don't know anyone of them. Until yesterday I did not know the rules either. ;) Thanks to our rugby enthusiastic french hostel occupants, we got a fast introduction to the world of rugby.

The show in the beginning was really great I believe if a football team in europe would do that stuff the crowd would be exploding. First there was the normal warmup. After that we had several riders coming into the arena with sword and bombastic music.

Von 20100213-CrusadersVsHighlanders

The army did part of the show too...

Von 20100213-CrusadersVsHighlanders

The game began:

Von 20100213-CrusadersVsHighlanders

The Crusaders where leading with 15:0 but the Highlanders did their best and where nearly turning the game 15:14 when the crusaders did two very nice plays and scored to the final 32:17. I had fun. But I was freezing my butt of again. I really hate the nights and evenings in New Zealand.

By the way ever seen this one? Fast Food vs. Healthy Food:

We have the year of the tiger again.

I put my Christchurch pictures up and will be doing the last shopping today.

The Bike

Yesterday I bought the bike:

I still need some stuff, like an emergency blanket, first aid kit, shirt and pants. But otherwise I am nearly ready to go. I buy the stuff today and tomorrow I will repack my things. My big Backpack will be sent to Auckland and hopefully I will get it back, when I see Tim again. Hopefully because I don't have a clue about NZ postal service.

The first few legs are planned so far. At the moment it looks like I need to travel quite long distances in the beginning but there are not so many ascends. So I believe I should be able to do this. Later on when I am in the hills I will see how far I can get each day. I only hope that I find hostels or hotels that still have rooms. I don't want to buy a tent and sleeping bag. So that is why I still think that I am going to need the emergency blanket. It would be really unwise to not being prepared if there is a sudden inconvinenient rainshower.

By the way I dropped the idea to get from Bluff to Cape Reinga. The bus coaches won't guarantee to take me with them Invercargill. My bike is the last to go on the bus and only if it is not full already. So I will be travelling von Christchurch to Queenstown and then turning north again. I will miss quite a few attractions but maybe I will come back some day and then I will use a car.

I really have problems with the left side driving. Turning right and looking over the right shoulder takes a lot of thinking at the moment. Yesterday I was cycling on the wrong side of the street. Lucky me because there were no other cars when I acknowledged my mistake.

Have a nice day. Families and friends all over the world.

Punkrock concert

Ok... I have done stranger things. Yesterday evening a girl visiting Kiwi Basecamp gave a concert in a bar. They told me it should be a punkrock gig. I have not been to one in a very long time, so I decided to join Nora, Marina, Heike and Stefan on their walk halfway through the city.

We arrived at Al's Bar and after paying the entry fee, we were part of the audience. I want to write something like perfect punkrock. :) But I am not so sure, because Monica was a one person combo. She played an acoustic guitar and sang. There were no drums and I was somehow missing the bass guitar.

Nevertheless the girl rocked. Screaming loud guitars with almost no melody and something that could have been an english text. I really thought I got better in english. Maybe I still need to learn a lot.

After maybe three songs I thought that it was actually worthwhile. I had fun and the music was not as bad as I first thought. A great thing about punk is, that you should not have any expectations. So you won't be disappointed.

So here is her Website: Monica and the Explosion

After that we went to the Bar Saints and Sinners of the Base Hostelgroup. There was a live band, too. Mostly harmless. ;) Still nice to hear after the previous attack on my ears.

While I am mentioning Concerts. On next tuesday there will be a Faith No More concert here in Christchurch. I am thinking about staying two additional days. Normally I would leave on monday in direction of Queenstown. I can get my Bike today. So that leaves me with only a few things left to do here in the city. But maybe I go to the concert. It just means I am losing two more days. I am unsure but it would be perfect drifting.

Jazz Concert and Service in the Cathedral

So the weather was not that great and we skipped going to the concert at the botanic garden here in Christchurch. But Jens told us, that there would be a jazz concert in the cathedral early in the evening.

After a brief discussion we went there in the hope that it will be more of a concert than a service. Nobody really wanted the service part. But the priest was really great. He did not do anything from the normal service repertoire, but tried to make a connection between the history of New Zealand and Jazz with its base in the afro-american culture.

So the four people played a bit of Jazz from a defined era and the priest discussed stuff that happened in this era in New Zealand and the U.S. during that time.

It did not always work. But the effort and try was well worth appreciating. For a free concert this was a great idea.

I especially liked the "dialog" where a maori read the Waitangi treaty on maori and the priest did it in english. I think like all the colonial treaties this one is not in favor of the original people of New Zealand. But they did not see it. So sad.

Still freezing.

Damn. The new clothes are not warm enough. I need to go shopping again today. Later today there will be a concert at the botanical garden. If the weather permits I like to listen to it. Some girls are singing a capella music.

Christchurch (Day 1)

Was habe ich eigentlich heute gemacht ausser Shoppen?

Brisbane (Day 3)

Nothing happening today. I went to the beach. Because tomorrow I'll be in NZ and it will to cold for that kind of fun. I am freezing just thinking about the temperature. I definitely need to go shopping there. Not enough warm clothes.

The weather in Brisbane is like in the Philippines at the Moment. Except for the windchill. This is really killing me sometimes. No breeze, it is more like thin ice needles. *brrr*

Pictures are up

Now wish me luck I need to get up at 4.30 in the morning. I don't want to miss my plane.

Brisbane (Day 2)

After writing the long post this morning I remembered that I watched Avatar in 3D yesterday. Never before did I see a nearly-3-hour-movie with glasses. Strange, but great fx.

Today I went to search for the park north of the city. (without looking at the map) So after a few kilometers circling the park. I finally found a north entrance. Generally parks and gardens in Brisbane are great. I believe it is the subtropical climate, that makes it easier to grow plants. The pictures will follow when I am in New Zealand.

The funny part about this trip is, that when I walked out of the south entrance I was at the City Hall just 100m distance from my hostel. Sometimes I should really use more maps. ;)

It was really hot so I went to the city beach in the afternoon. It was really easy to identify myself as tourist, because I was the only one who was not wearing knee-length-bathing-shorts. Australians are strange. Because of the whole day in the sun you can now see really neat stripes from my sunglasses. Damn.

I am in a land down under...

Brisbane. I like the city. I would not live here. But it is busy. It is small and it has skyscrapers. :)

Monday to Tuesday I was on the trip to Brisbane with a short stop in Singapore Changi Airport. The Airport is still great. Carpets, warm colors, friendly and helpful staff. Everything You miss in Germany.

After 13 hours on the plane. I stepped onto australian soil. There at the border I got my first surprise. "Follow me, please. Sir." Damn I did not know what I did wrong. I definitely hope that I don't look like a terrorist and that I don't cross the wrong answers on the custom quiz.

It was an fairly straightforward problem. I got my visa from the eVisitor program of Australia. But I skipped entering my middle name, like I always do. I am lazy, You know? They told me, that it happens all the time and that they need to update my electronic visa. Stupid system. :) So after a nice chat with the police(?) officer. I went out of the airport and took the airport train to the city.

Stepping of the train was easy and my hostel (Base Central in Brisbane) is conveniently located next to the train station. As expected I took the wrong exit but I did walk the right street down without having a map and asked a local. Lucky me.

At 8 o'clock local time I arrived at the hostel. But my room is not yet ready for another 6 hours. So I went for the first sightseeing walk. Through the city over the river to the south bank. There is really nice Park with city beaches and award winning design. I liked it a lot. You can see the pictures in a few days. Inconveniently, I don't have free wifi. (I am at a café, but I am on a time limit. 45 minutes till my drinks and the wifi access disappear.)

After crossing the bridge again I found myself at the botanical garden. Everything is really conveniently located. Now I needed to find something to eat. So a short walk back to city center I saw a long queue in front of a sushi vendor. I could not guess why there where people standing on the street to get their lunch. So i had a look in the sushi store and nearly dropped my back and jaw. Really big maki rolls for 2.20 AUD. So a whole meal for me like 3 maki rolls makes roundabout 4.40 EUR. Back in Germany I would pay 3 to 4 times as much. No wonder that there are long queues. Healthy food cheaper than McDonald. I am in love with this city or Australia. Just kidding. But now I know what my lunch and dinner will look like the next days. Sushi Takeaway. No need to try any cooking in the hostel for this price.

My room is a cell. But I only need it for sleeping. So it is not as bad as it sounds. The toilet and shower are fairly clean but like the standard I used to have in the Philippines for this price. Maybe I should have stayed in Asia. It is cheaper and more comfortable.

I have two days left in Brisbane. I believe I will take the tour to cuddle a Koala. Or I try saving money and spent the days at the beach.

Like I said. The pictures follow in the next few days.
